Strathewen were coming back for another crack at the Kelly Shield Premiership, whilst Donath were in their first grand final since their original appearance ten years ago after the merger of Hygrade and Plenty United.
Strathewen won the toss and elected to bat. They got off to a nightmarish start losing early wickets and never really recovering as wickets kept on falling until the oldest player on the field said enough's enough and dug in. From 8/60, Shane "Spud" Liddicutt and Stefan Aiton added 56 valuable runs against the tide before "Spud" was out with the score on 116. Their innings was finished at 121. The best of the bowling from Donath were Harley Orton 4/22 and Jamie Shepherd 3/38. Not a big score, but J.E. Moore Park North was slow.
Donath had to face 17 overs on day one and when stumps were drawn they were 3/42. Still a lot of cricket to be played and cricket being a funny game, anything can happen. Day two starts and Donath lose a wicket almost straight away. At 5/42, Grant Borsi comes to the crease and seems at ease with the bowling. Grant and Ken Lawson move the score along and at 75 Grant is out. A mini collapse sees three wickets all on 75. This has Donath now on 8/75 with only the bowlers left to try and make 47 runs. Alas, it is not to be for Donath as they are all out for 88. The best of the bowlers for Strathewen are Stefan Aiton 4/46 and Jordan Venables 4/8.
Strathewen are now up into Quick Shield after a long period in Kelly Shield. A great effort for the Club.
